Beautiful People #5. Siblings

PAPERFURY
Beautiful People is a writers meme hosted by Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up and Further In! Every month there is a set of ten questions that they post for everyone to answer about their characters! It's both a way for readers to get to know your characters better and for you too. If you're a writer we highly recommend you check it out as it's all kinds of fun! This month is all about siblings or sibling-like relationships...
Grace's Showcases: The Trask Twins (Mary and January) From The Black Queen

1. What is the first memory they have of each other?
Well, they don't really have memories of each other. To both of them, the other has been there since forever.

2. Describe their relationship in 3 words.
Fight. Makeup. Repeat.

3. What kind of things do they like to do together?
What they really like to do? Well, they love to pretend to hate each other while ganging up on my main character, Ashlina, or some other character. They are smarter than everyone thinks. They are sly as a fox.

4. What was their biggest fight?
They have a lot of not-so-serious fights. But their most serious fight was probably their squabbles over the other's character flaws.

5. How far would they go to save each other?
Both of them are very connected to each other. If there is no way to save the other, then that twin will ask to be subjected to the same problem. They never want to let each other. They will stay with each other.

6. What are their pet peeves about each other?
How identical they look to each other.

7. What are their favorite things about each other?
Oh, they pretend they don't have favorite things about each other. But I think January likes her sister's wit and manners (or lack of them). Mary probably likes how well they work together. Like twins!

8. What traits do they share? Mannerisms, clothing, quirks, looks, etc?
These two are interchangeable. They can easily pretend to be the other, and let other characters think that Mary is January, January is Mary. Mary is the sillier one, who plays a lot of nasty jokes on people and wears a lot of white. January is calmer (she is the older one). She prefers bright colors, but... she can settle for white.

9. Who has the strongest personality?
Mary's strength is in sound. January's strength is in the lack of it. Still, I think they are both equally strong.

10. How does their relationship change throughout your story?
They mess around in my book, but their relationship is pretty static (until the sequel).

Steele Showcases: Jam and Gwen from A War Of Queens
For clarification, Jam is a girl(as is Gwen) and her name is a nickname and yes, it's pronounced jam as in peanut butter and jam. Also, her name has changed a dozen times since I first wrote this and I'm currently rewriting the whole thing as a stand-alone novel, so her name may change yet again. They are both seventeen and they are not the chosen ones.

1. What is the first memory they have of each other? Hmm. Impossible to tell because they grew up, from when they were both babies, together in foster care. One of their earliest memories though is of when they were five and ran away together, they lived for one full night on their own in a treehouse in some old ladies backyard.

2. Describe their relationship in 3 words. Essential. Dependant. Needy.

3. What kind of things do they like to do together? Simple things, they just like hanging out. They like going for drives where they can pretend they're going anywhere in the world. They saved since they were fourteen to be able to afford their old junker car.

4. What was their biggest fight? That's going to happen in the book, it involves a lot of jealousy and high emotions, and, of course, a few boys. Besides that there was the one where Jam pulled strings to get Gwen a job after she was fired and Gwen didn't appreciate it.

5. How far would they go to save each other? All the way. They'd die for each other. Everything else gets put on hold and shoved to the side after their fight.

6. What are their pet peeves about each other? Gwen doesn't like that Jam won't stand up for herself and Jam doesn't like that Gwen is so...dependant. She's needing and Jam worries that it makes her weak. Also, Jam bites her nails which annoys Gwen, and Gwen doesn't really have a filter which has been known to embarrass Jam.

7. What are their favorite things about each other? Jam loves that Gwen's so outgoing, even if she's overly sensitive. Jam can't help but be envious of the way she wears her heart on her sleeve. Gwen loves that Jam is the one that thinks things through, and also that despite Jam's anxiety issues she's the strongest person she knows.

8. What traits do they share? Mannerisms, clothing, quirks, looks, etc? They both clap their hands when they're excited. They each always wear one of each of two pairs of socks, so they each pick a pair of socks, different colors, and each wear one of each. They've perfected nearly identical glares, and both tend to bite their lips when thinking hard.

9. Who has the strongest personality? Hard to say...but probably Gwen. Jam is all steely resolve and rock hard willpower. Gwen wears her heart on her sleeve, she has no filter, and she never apologizes for who she is even in the dark recesses of her mind where she's basically the most self-conscious person in the world.

10. How does their relationship change throughout your story? Hmm, well they're relationship has some up and downs, it's going to completely fall apart but in the end I think they'll be closer than ever while realizing they are two different people.

So, tell us, do you write a lot of sibling-like relationships? Don't forget to link us to your Beautiful People posts so we can check them out!

  1. Finally getting around to this! I was waiting until mine went live. (Speaking of which: https://saraletourneau.wordpress.com/2015/04/16/beautiful-people-vol-3-siblings/) Plus I've been super-busy, though not with April NaNo.

Grace: Mary and January sound like they interact the way I'd expect sisters who are close in age (let alone twins) to interact. Especially the not-so-serious fights. What pair of sisters doesn't bicker about stupid things? :) I got a chuckle out of that. Also, love that you have a character named January.

Are the girls completely identical in appearance? Or is there a slight way to tell them apart?

Alex: Jam and Gwen seem very similar in some ways, but quite different in others. I'm curious to know how the plot will drive them apart and then bring them back together... but that would be a spoiler, so forgot I even mentioned that. *lol*

Good luck with your WIPs, ladies!

    1. Haha, pesky spoilers always getting in the way! Don't worry about commenting a little late we are so behind this month, it's not even remotely funny. =)
I'm glad Jam and Gwen caught your interest! I'm still working slowly on outining their book but the book and characters are some of my most favourite ones.

  2. Sorry I'm getting around to this so late! I love the sound of these twins, Grace! Now, I may have missed something, but where are the answers for Steele's sibling set?
