Weekly Muse #1: The Inspirational Songs

Penelope here. Alright, I'm going to compose a list of all those songs that just makes you write. It might look a bit weird (especially for the first time!). These songs are in no particular order.

1. "Cosmic Love" by Florence + the Machine.

I know, I know. I couldn't resist. "Comic Love" is just one of those songs that make you feel like you are anywhere else but here. This song is especially good for those authors writing Fantasy or Love. It is hauntingly beautiful, dark, and gritty. Plus, the way Florence sings it gives you the sugars, right? Come on! You have to agree with me on that. Anyway, this song is pure inspirational, totally Muse material. You don't need a guy to make you write (though you are more likely to be distracted if you have one).

2. "I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis.

Donna Lewis may look weird in the video, but I'll tell you that the song is great. It gives you the impression that you are floating away and gazing into the eyes of someone you... Oh, my goodness. I'm getting off track.

3. "Ain't It Fun" by Paramore.

"Ain't It Fun" is probably chaotic, wild, untamed for a lot of people. I'll tell you that it is crazy, but from all the craziness, there is this strange girl who is probably upset at someone who is in their own world. Anyway, this song is best for those arrogant and conceited (and selfish) characters who wake up and find out that they aren't at the center of the world. Their own world, perhaps, but not the real world.

4. "Sweet Nothing" by Calvin Harris

You can probably tell that I'm a big Florence Welsh fan. I love all of her music (music video remains questionable). This song is about a love that is bad. (Like Edward and Bella bad). The singer (Florence) gave everything she had, and her lover simply took it all and pretty much starved her of love. The music video makes it even more alive, but I don't recommend watching it if you are skittish around strippers. And don't you dare say that she is a hooker.

5. "Your Song" by Elton John

I realize I have a lot of female singers, so I decided to throw in Elton John. Now, he may be old, but he is gold. Ha! It rhymes. Anyway, "Your Song" is magnificent. Whenever I listen to this song, I always think of the sorrows of life. The singer sings about his wishes and hopes, yet also asks his love to be okay with not what he has, but who he is. It is one of those songs that have great poise and sadness. It always reminds me of that poor boy who pins for a rich girl, but has nothing to gain her parent's blessings for their marriage.

Songs are open to interpretation. Each song is unique to a certain person. For example, "Imagine" by John Lennon (didn't make this list sadly) always reminds me of the sadder parts of life yet also gives me hope to go on.

Last word: Find your muse. Find the song that you love, the one that makes you write. Eventually, you'll find something beautiful.

Happy Writing!

  1. This one is a bit weird, so... I can't quite get the spacing right. Please ignore that.
